24/25 July, Kaprun, Austria. The second edition of the GROSSGLOCKNER ULTRA-TRAIL® powered by DYNAFIT was a complete success. With the start and finish in Kaprun, Austria, the race this year had 727 participants from 31 countries taking on the Alpine Running challenge in one of four different races. The race with alpine sections on the highest mountain in Austria is considered one of the most demanding trail running competitions in the Eastern Alps.
Just as at the event’s debut in 2015, there were two winners in the premier race, the GROSSGLOCKNER ULTRA-TRAIL®. Florian Grasel and Gerald Fister completed the 110-kilometer run with 6,500 meters of climb in a course record of 15 hours, 13 minutes, 36 seconds, and ran across the fi nish line together. Among the women, Kristin Berglund led from start to fi nish. DYNAFIT athlete Markus Stock claimed the victory in the 50k event (2,000 meters of climbing). Johanna Erhart of Team DYNAFIT was the fi rst woman across the line in the 30k event (1,000 meters of climbing).
The gun went off for the start of the GROSSGLOCKNER ULTRA-TRAIL® powered by DYNAFIT at exactly midnight on the Salzburg Platz (Salzburg Square) in Kaprun. The 110k race took runners over Fusch on the Glocknerstrasse (Glockner High Alpine Road) and past the Glocknerhaus then down to Kals in East Tyrol and over the “Kaprun Tφrl,” past the Verbund lakes at Moserboden and back to Kaprun.
Organizer Hubert Resch and his team – some 250 course marshals including members of the mountain rescue and more than 50 volunteers at six aid stations – monitored the entire Glockner route to ensure the safety and well-being of the athletes. In addition to the GROSSGLOCKNER ULTRA-TRAIL® and the 50K Glockner Trail event (2,000 meters vertical), organizers launched two new race formats with the 30k Glacier World Trail (Gletscherwelt Trail, 1,000 meters vertical) and the GGUT 110|2 two-person relay race.
An additional safety feature was offered with “Tractalis” Live Tracking that allowed runners’ locations to be tracked from start to finish. DYNAFIT, official outfitter of the organizational committee and volunteers, is the proud partner of the event and would like to thank organizers for their professional race management. A total of 14 DYNAFIT athletes from Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic there, as were four DYNAFIT employees.
Austrians Gerald Fister and Florian Grasel tied for a highly acclaimed first place with a new course record of 15:13.36. (Last year’s winning tied time of Markus Amon and Klaus Gφsweiner was 16:47.56.) DYNAFIT athlete Markus Stock won the Glockner Trail with a time of 4:48.21 on the 50k course with 2,000 meters of climbing. Among women, Sandra Koblmόller took the victory. Young DYNAFIT athlete Johanna Erhart was victorious over the 30k distance with a time of 3:34.15. Jan Mrazek of the Czech Republic took the men’s victory with his time of 2:57.25.

Organizer’s positive wrap-up comments: “The total number of participants nearly doubled; we received a lot of constructive feedback from athletes; there were no injuries; we had ideal weather conditions, a fantastic support team, and strong partners on board. I would say that the GROSSGLOCKNER ULTRA-TRAIL® powered by DYNAFIT was again a total success,” summarized Hubert Resch. An additional validation for the event came from the UTMB® organizational committee, which said it was a qualifying race par excellence for the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc.
