The 2023 edition of this 170 km mountain ultra marathon will take place in early September, presented by endurance athlete Lizzy Hawker. The Ultra Tour Monte Rosa encircles Europe’s largest mountain massif on the Swiss-Italian border on the Tour de Monte Rosa long distance trail.

We’re very happy to finally return (post Covid) with a full complement of races, including our 170 km Ultra Tour. No lottery, no series, no stones ..... just us and the mountains. "The race with soul", they tell us.

Registrations opened 30 January with a simple pre-registration process only so that we are confident runners have the experience to have a safe and happy race.

The 2023 edition is from 6 - 9 September, all races start and finish in Grächen

  •  170 km Ultra Tour
  •  170 km Stage Race (4 days)
  •  Mischabel 100
  •  Mischabel 60
  •  Grächen Berglauf (23 km )

What makes the UTMR different? “The race is beautiful, it is personal, not too many people,” said Corinne Kagerer, Swiss winner of the shortened 170 km Ultra Tour in 2019. The male winner, Damian Hall, from the UK said, “UTMR has more climb, more technical terrain, more altitude, more glacier crossings and more beauty than UTMB. I’ll definitely be back."

Why another ultra? “This is the race I wanted to race”, says Lizzy Hawker, an endurance athlete and five-time winner of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. “I trained here for the UTMB. I love this route - it’s bold, very beautiful and definitely brutal,” says Hawker.

Places are limited to 450 for the ultras and 250 for the stage race.

The fourth edition of this 170 km mountain ultra marathon will take place at the beginning of September, presented by endurance athlete Lizzy Hawker. The Ultra Tour Monte Rosa encircles Europe’s largest mountain massif on the Swiss-Italian border on the Tour de Monte Rosa long distance trail. The non-stop ultra tour of Monte Rosa is accompanied by a stage race over four days. A sister race ‘Three Passes Ultra’ covers 100 km from Gressoney-la-Trinité to Grächen, with 6,300m of elevation change, crossing Passo Turlo and Passo Monte Moro.

100 mile endurance race around the giant massif of Monte Rosa cut short at 82 km due to bad weather. The interrupted race was won by Damian Hall from the United Kingdom in 11:30:00 and Corine Kagerer from Switzerland in 13:52:56.

The 2019 Ultra Tour Monte Rosa was significantly affected by a severe weather system unusual for the time of year. The flagship race, the 170 km full tour of Monte Rosa was stopped at Gressoney La Trinité in Aosta, 82 km into the race, for reasons of safety. Of the 239 starters, 5 women and 90 men reached Gressoney.
